Medical capillaries for blood collection are glass tubes that are used for blood sampling and after insertion into automated analytical instruments they allow blood analysis.
Medical capillaries must meet a number of technical requirements including chemical composition of the glass, which must not release any chemical components into the blood, the dimensions of the capillaries, which must be kept within tight tolerances, the inner and outer diameter of the capillaries and their length, which guarantee that the required volume of blood is drawn.
The small inner diameter of the capillaries is a prerequisite for the capillary function of the tubes and thus for easy blood collection. The outer dimensions of the capillaries are adapted to various types of analytical instruments.
The edges of the capillaries may be rounded to avoid any injury or damage caused by sharp edges.
According to customer's requirements, the capillary surface may be coated with a thin layer of an anticoagulant substance soluble in the blood, which – for a certain period of time – prevents the blood collected in the capillary from clotting.
In the Czech Republic, the manufacture of medical capillaries for blood collection began in the glass factory of Otvovice in the late 1980th.
The original pilot production was gradually improved in cooperation with the Biochemical Department for Medical Equipment and based on the experience of pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Upon customer's requirements, the capillaries can be supplied with some accessories, which include lancets, caps to close the ends of the capillaries and mixing wires.
Medical capillaries can also be supplied treated with anticoagulants of several types.
As part of our technical development we built a small scale production facility with sufficient capacity and ability to produce medical capillaries of very good quality.
